Ultimate Google Search Tips
Better searches equal better results! Here are some cool modifiers to type in your Google search box to refine your searches and get the best results. I know there are many guys in uniform who think they know everything about searching the internet using Google, but you may be surprised.
1. Exact Phrase ”"What it does: searches for an exact phrase
What to type: “Hollywood shower”
What you’ll get: results that include the exact phrase “Hollywood shower”
2. Excluded Words -
What it does: excludes search results with particular word or phrase
What to type: military -army
What you’ll get: results about military that are not related to army
3. Similar Words ~
What it does: searches for a word and all its synonyms
What to type: ~employment
What you’ll get: results with the word “employment”, as well as “career” and “job”
4. Multiple Words or
What it does: searches for WebPages that include either word
What to type: vacation Naples OR Bahrain
What you’ll get: results with the word “vacation” and either “Naples” or “Bahrain”
5. Numerical Ranges …
What it does: searches for a range of numbers
What to type: Navy 1970…1980
What you’ll get: results about Navy during this time period
6. Find Meanings
What it does: defines a word or phrase
What to type: define: scuttlebutt
What you’ll get: links to definitions of the word “scuttlebutt”
7. Site Specific
What it does: defines a word or phrase
What to type: define: honor
What you’ll get: links to definitions of the word “honor”
8. Linked Pages
What it does: searches for WebPages that link to a particular website
What to type: link: www.jimnavy.com
What you’ll get: websites that link to the JimNavy website
9. Math Answers
What it does: basic calculator functions
What to type: 4+7, 30% of 55, 20^2
What you’ll get: the answer
10. Conversions
What it does: converts units of measure
What to type: cm in foot, 28C in F, $ in pound, days in fortnight, miles in league, mph in speed of light, etc.
What you’ll get: the converted answer
11. Wildcard
This is useful if you’re trying to find the lyrics to a song, but can’t remember the exact lyrics. [Can’t * me love lyrics] will return the Beatles song you’re looking for.
12. Phone Listing
Let’s say someone calls you on your mobile number and you don’t know how it is. If all you have is a phone number, you can look it up on Google using the phonebook feature. Example: phonebook: 555-555-5555.
13. Area Code Lookup
If all you need to do is to look-up the area code for a phone number, just enter the 3-digit area code and Google will tell you where it’s from. Example: 617.
14. Movies/Music
Use the “movie:” operator to search for a movie title or “music:” for music.
15. Cached pages
Looking for a version of a page the Google stores on its own servers? This can help with outdated or update pages. Use the “cached:” operator.
